Overall assessment:
The Plantronics CS540 had some seriously big shoes to fill following on from the Plantronics CS60. In our opinion, they haven't done a bad job.
The CS540 is a little lighter, coming in at only 21g. You can still wear it over the head or over the ear, depending on your personal preference, and there is still a third "neckband" option (supplied separately). The headset itself is a little thinner, especially the microphone, which is more discrete then it's predecessor, while still offering the same basic volume and pick up buttons as before.
The Plantronics CS540 still connects as easily with your telephone. There is an optional HL10 Handset Lifter for compatibility with most telephones, although you do not need one to use the headset. For use with some of the major desktop telephone manufacturers, there is also an Electronic Hook Switch (EHS) which is a far cleaner solution.. Please be aware the EHS and HL10 Handset Lifter for the CS540 range are different to the old CS60 headset.
The major upgrades are not immediately obvious. One nifty upgrade is the conference call feature. If you are on a call with someone, and you wish for a colleague to join your call, all they need to do is stick their CS540 into your base unit and they will be connected. You can add 3 addition headsets to a call. The sound quality has also been upgraded with wideband audio, providing a far richer experience. Battery life is improved to.
One criticism is the base unit which has been redesigned. Although it looks very smart, the space it takes up on your desk is bigger when you are using the over the head headband. This seems to get tangled with the cable going into the base unit.
That being said, it's difficult to fault the Plantronics CS540 headset and we would highly recommend it.
